5 out of 5 stars A MUST HAVE   August 28, 2010
Lance Gayhart (Lexington)
A phenomenal collaboration with Stuart Price, who produced Madonna's 'Confessions On A Dance Floor'. Honestly I have played this CD over and over and over for going on a week now. It has unmistakable sexual energy, yet never crosses the line in to tacky or needing to be censored. Although the title track, Night Work (probably intentionally) could easily be used for the opening credits of a gay 80's porno, it is much more refined, electronic, and danceable. The track "A Whole New Way" is somehow reminiscent of George Michael's "I Want Your Sex", while "Any Which Way" is classic Scissor Sisters'. If you listen closely you can hear Kylie Minogue on the backing vocals for this track. Kylie even lent a barely recognizable sample of "Can't Get You Out Of My Head" to another equally infectious track called "Something Like This", which oddly enough sounds similar to the 80's band, Laid Back's "White Horse". But the track that stands out the most on this body of work would have to be "Harder You Get". Edgy, and well, hard, this song demands attention. And the hook is amazing. If you like songs to listen to loudly and bang your head to, this is it. I call it old Cheap Trick meets Alice Cooper, with a funky guitar solo, and an addictive bass line. Elements to the musical construction of "Running Out", I would compare to Devo as well. And last but not least, "Invisible Light". Wow! Epic. Just epic. It's a fine piece of story telling of the ancient city of Babylon, featuring spoken words that Vincent Price would admire. This is an instant classic. I give very high marks for this latest body of work from Scissor Sisters. If you enjoy 70's and 80's synth pop, this is definitely a must have; not only for Scissor Sisters fans, but newcomers to the diversity of this talented group, alike. Five stars all the way!

5 out of 5 stars Their best album yet   August 21, 2010
Night Work
This album is so brilliantly mixed and mastered, it must be listened to.
The layering of sound is incredible. Song lyrics are well thought out, and the whole cd is track after track of non-stop dancing music from one of the world's greatest bands. Their concept for this album as they've stated in interviews is so fully accomplished it is astounding.
Best of their albums yet, deserves to win awards.

4 out of 5 stars I want you to funk me.   August 21, 2010
Jason Stein (San Diego, CA United States)
Tearing a page out of the "Flashdance" handbook, Scissor Sister's third album plays like a sweaty striptease at some late night bar on Santa Monica boulevard. The band slithers and grooves its way across an album that seems seductive and smarmy, lustful and lascivious.

This time around the band creates a far more straightforward dance album with producer Stuart Price. The results are very 80's meets 70's dance floor leg warmers. The theme of sexual exploration set against a night of experimentation permeates the album. From "Whole New Way", "Any Which Way", "Harder You Get", "Skin This Cat", "Skin Tight" and "Sex and Violence" you can tell the band is living up to its name.

There are some blissful moments such as the vocal melody on "Fire With Fire", one of the best tracks here with its anthemic hopefulness. Elsewhere, the band incorporates Kraftwerk's "Radioactivity" into "Something Like This". And then there's the six minute trance-like "Invisible Light" that closes the album--a track that shows the band moving in a slightly different direction.

With all this retro 80's and 70's mash-up it seems as if the band is holding steady. What I mean by this is, all three of Scissor Sisters' albums are neither classic five star albums or below average one star albums. They break even every time. As much as I liked "Night Work" I found myself wondering if this is all the band plans to do musically--mash up past musical trends. Or will they be daring and shift gears for their next album? The mark of a great band is one who begins with trends, and then develops into something all their own. Scissor Sisters keep threatening its fans with a really great album, but it hasn't materialized just yet.

Four stars, because "Night Work" is entertaining and catchy, never dull or uninspired. Yet, it's not more than that. The lyrics are a bit pedestrian, as if the band was afraid to really push the envelope like Prince did in his best days. I found myself listening to the lyrics thinking that there's nothing new there. There could have been something more. Musically, "Night Work" is a nice retro-feel album with a modern twist, but just listen to a band like Passion Pit, and how they turn a retro sound into something approaching original. I think Scissor Sisters played it safe here. I wonder what the scrapped album sounded like before they went ahead and gave us this? Was it more experimental? Would it have alienated fans? I wonder.

Here's my comparison chart for "Night Work" compared to Scissor Sisters' previous work:

2004 Scissor Sisters: Four Stars
2006 Ta-Dah: Four Stars
2010 Night Work: Four Stars

5 out of 5 stars Harder they get, better we dance!   August 17, 2010

I don't remember the last time I listen to a more sexually charged album! I think it was in 1992 with Madonna's Erotica. This LP is not for the average-middle class-hetero-Joe. It's driven, dirty, sexy and more.
I don't understand why they released "Fire with Fire" first. It's not the stronger single of the album.
It is produced by Stuart Price, the one who gave us "Confessions on a dancefloor" few years ago. It goes electronica-pop-kitsh-80's but there is substance. It did remind me a lot of the 80's groove. They have this Bee Gees feeling, ELO sometimes, even Franky goes to Hollywood!

The album opens with "Night Work", an upbeat song.
"Whole new way" sounds like "I want your sex" from Georges Michael. I'm sure the songs would mix together.
Stand out song : "Any which way"... wow, it's groove sooooo much! We feel the urge of having sex on a dancefloor. One of my favorite and the videoclip is awesome. Remember : "Coco butter cash"!!!
"Harder they get" is a mix between Donna Summer and Queen in the 80's. Love that song!

"Running out" is really good too with the 80's guitar. It has a feel of "The cars". "Something like this" is also 80's but more electro. It reminds me of Depeche Mode and Human League.
"Skin this cat" is the slowest song of the album and it is sing by the gorgeous Ana Matronic.

From "Skin thight", the rest of the album is like a ready to dance sound track like Madonna's "Confessions". "Sex and violence" seems to be stolen from Bronsky Beat discotheque but it's good! "Night life" is also a fun song with the base of Pat Benatar. And the last song, one of my favorite is "Invisible light" a clear hommage to "Franky goes to Hollywood" Relax.

It's one of the fresh album of 2010 and I can't wait to see them live in Montreal (August 29).

If you want to groove in a sexy and sexual way, this album is for you. And it's cleary for me ;-)

Love the Scissor Sisters and JAKE is the sexiest singer of them all!
