Finian's Rainbow may be one of the quirkier classics in the Broadway repertoire, but it is a classic, anchored by three great standards: "How Are Things in Glocca Mora?", "Old Devil Moon," and "Look to the Rainbow." The quirkiness mostly comes from the plot: Irishman Finian McLongeran (Jim Norton) arrives in America along with his loyal daughter (Kate Baldwin) and a pot of gold that he intends to bury near Fort Knox in order to grow it into a fortune. Throw in a bunch of sharecroppers led by Woody (Cheyenne Jackson) and an angry leprechaun who wants his gold back (Christopher Fitzgerald), and you have the framework for the score by Burton Lane and E.Y. "Yip" Harburg that also includes the comedic "When I'm Not Near the Girl I Love" and the ensemble numbers "If This Isn't Love" and "That Great 'Come-and-Get-It' Day." The 2009 revival cast recording may not have the charms of the original Broadway lead, Ella Logan, but Baldwin is a particularly appealing lead herself, and top to bottom it's the best-sung recording and the most complete. While its Broadway run only lasted three months, the production received three Tony nominations, for Baldwin, Fitzgerald, and Best Revival of a Musical. --David Horiuchi

Album Description
The classic American musical Finian's Rainbow returned to Broadway on October 29, 2009, to rave reviews. The New York Times predicted 'permanent sunshine' for this 'thoroughly winning and joyous' production; Variety hailed it as an 'infectious charmer, with one of Broadway's consistently melodious scores;' while the critic for The Wall Street Journal stated simply, I don't think I've ever seen a more musically satisfying show.' Featuring some of the wittiest, most heartfelt and memorable songs ever written for the stage (including How Are Things in Glocca Morra?, Old Devil Moon, and Look to the Rainbow), Burton Lane and Yip Harburg's score - rendered here by a cast of 29 and a full orchestra -- remains one of Broadway's finest. The acclaimed cast includes Broadway stars Jim Norton, Cheyenne Jackson and Christopher Fitzgerald, plus newcomer Kate Baldwin in a star-making turn. With its sparkling score of beloved standards and a whimsical story that dances between romance, satire and fairy tale, Finian's Rainbow is a musical theater treasure, and this' New Broadway Cast Recording will 'carry you away on a cloud of melody, magic and make-you-swoon performances. (New York Daily News).

5 out of 5 stars A terrific Rainbow performance   May 24, 2010

First-rate performances, beautiful singing, full orchestrations, complete score. This is the perfect revival and a terrific complement to the original cast album. Kate Baldwin's Sharon is beautifully sung and truly captivating. This FINIAN'S RAINBOW warrants as many if not more repeated plays as the Columbia original cast. Not one disappointing note. I love it.

Great album! I saw the show on Broadway in November 2009 after reading the NY Times review and loved it. The cast is amazing, and the character and whimsy of the staging really translate to the album recording. A must for any Broadway fan!

4 out of 5 stars FINIAN'S RAINBOW, the Revival   April 5, 2010

I saw this wonderful musical in December, 2009, and loved it. It is beyond me that it was forced to close in January because of poor ticket sales, despite it getting basically rave reviews. The recording is note perfect and the performances are right on the money. If I had one thing to quibble about(and this is true of many current original broadway cast albums)it is the lack of resonance in the recording. It sounds as if it was recorded in a Kleenex box. Cast recordings during the Golden Years were made in acoustically resonant spaces, such as Webster Hall or the Manhattan Center. My recording of the OBC of BELLS ARE RINGING, made in 1956 and utilizing the stereo process for the first time by Columbia Records, has a more satisfactory sound than this recording of FINIAN'S RAINBOW.

There is a standout performance by Christopher Fitzgerald as the leprechaun Og. He gets to sing two of the superb numbers, "Something Sort of Grandish" and "When I'm Not Near The Girl I love, I Love the Girl I'm Near".

Overall, this is a great score and this cast album belongs on your shelf.

1 out of 5 stars boring boring boring   March 29, 2010

I don't know how they have the nerve to call this a revival. The music is very "1940" and the story line hasn't been updated in the least.

This sountrack is the first that I have ever owned that i couldn't bear to listen to all the way through. Not even once

4 out of 5 stars Almost great   March 22, 2010

As owner of the original Finian's with Ella Logan, who someone who has many of the songs sloshing around in his head, I couldn't wait to see the revival, especially after the scintillating reviews. And the show really did live up to billings, somehow freshened and modern even while maintaining the original arrangements, orchestrations and tempos. A shame it didn't find an audience.

And so I was particularly eager to get my hands on the recording. It manages to be both rewarding and disappointing. It well-captures the wonderful melodies and lyrics and the singing is almost uniformly fine. And yet. And yet. On CD, it feels...old. The performances feel a little stiff and 'pushed', especially the spoken portions. And the orchestra, which felt a little thin live, feels very thin here. More like a few-piece band than an orchestra. This may have been a function of cheaping-out to save money in the on-stage orchestra, transferred "faithfully" to the recording. It brings the whole recording down a notch with it. And on a few numbers, I find myself wishing the tempos were picked up just a bit; they seem to drag.

Overall, it's great to have a modern recording of wonderful songs well sung. I just yearn for what might have been.
