| Editorial Reviews:
Album Description The classic American musical Finian's Rainbow returned to Broadway on October 29, 2009, to rave reviews. The New York Times predicted 'permanent sunshine' for this 'thoroughly winning and joyous' production; Variety hailed it as an 'infectious charmer, with one of Broadway's consistently melodious scores;' while the critic for The Wall Street Journal stated simply, I don't think I've ever seen a more musically satisfying show.' Featuring some of the wittiest, most heartfelt and memorable songs ever written for the stage (including How Are Things in Glocca Morra?, Old Devil Moon, and Look to the Rainbow), Burton Lane and Yip Harburg's score - rendered here by a cast of 29 and a full orchestra -- remains one of Broadway's finest. The acclaimed cast includes Broadway stars Jim Norton, Cheyenne Jackson and Christopher Fitzgerald, plus newcomer Kate Baldwin in a star-making turn. With its sparkling score of beloved standards and a whimsical story that dances between romance, satire and fairy tale, Finian's Rainbow is a musical theater treasure, and this' New Broadway Cast Recording will 'carry you away on a cloud of melody, magic and make-you-swoon performances. (New York Daily News).

You Will Sing Along March 13, 2010 Lily Gibbs (NYC) This wonderful revival didn't last long on Broadway, but this CD will have you singing along with beautiful voices and good old fashioned lyrics. Despite the age of the story (1947), it has surprizing applicability in today's world. The Amazon price is a great value!
Performance: 100% Sound Quality: ZERO March 12, 2010 A. Gregory (Chesterfield,, Virginia USA) The new recording of "Finian's Rainbow" is a gem--but it's a diamond in the rough. For the first time ever, the miraculous score is presented in its entirely, and it sung and played spectacularly. The performances are the diamond; the rough, however, diminishes the experience severely. Difficult though it may be to believe, Columbia's 1947 original cast recording of "Finian's Rainbow" is sonically superior to the brand-new Broadway revival recording. This revival cast recording in pure digital clarity has the ambiance of Decca's 1940's recordings of "Oklahamo!" and "Carousel," which is to say that this "Finian's Rainbow" sounds like it was recorded in a linen closet. The sound is at once clear and dead. It conjures visions of the singers standing shoulder to shoulder with the instrumentalists as they duck falling pillow cases. In contrast, Columbia's original cast version has the full sound of a show performed in a theatre. If the technicians who recorded this spectacular performance last December had an iota of respect for theatre and cast recordings in general and a love of "Finian's Rainbow" in particular, this could have been one of the finest cast recordings of all time. Performances: 100%, Recording: zero.
Not even close... March 11, 2010 Ryff Wolf (Southern CA) In the movie "The Way We Were", there's a scene early on when Redford breaks up with Streisand for the first time. It takes place in an empty radio studio, Barbra turns her back to camera, and says "Oh dear, oh dear, oh dear..." in resignation, regret, and pain. I felt exactly the same way listening to the new Broadway cast recording of "Finian's Rainbow." There are few shows that can boast a song stack as fabulous as "Rainbow." And even though critics and audiences have had problems with the fantasy elements of the story, taken as a whole, and supported by those musical gems, the show is exactly what it has always meant to be - a charming musical fantasy. The problem with this newest production doesn't lie in the cast or the book. It's the arrangements and orchestrations, which couldn't sound more listless and dated. Unfortunately, derspite the great reviews when this revivial opened, audiences didn't flock to it, they basically rejected it wholesale. The worst part of this occurrence is that another large-scale revival isn't likely to happen.
But, the movie still exists and it is this production, directed by a young Francis Ford Coppola (and presented by Warner Bros. in 1968 as a big roadshow attraction) that has therefore become the reference edition of the show. It seems that you either love "Finian's Rainbow" or you don't really get it at all. And there are many people who don't like the film. BUT, the movie soundtrack is the most enjoyable of all the recordings produced. The tempos are sped up by about 5 or 10 percent, the rousing pieces are indeed quite rousing, and the orchestral work is wide, shiny, and sun-filled. The stage recordings simply don't come close to conveying the dazzle and the fun. Not to mention that Petula Clark's heartbreaking rendition of "How Are Things in Glocca Morra?" is the definitve version, and that "Old Devil Moon" (sung by Clark and the rich tenor of Don Francks) shimmers with eroticism. The latest album is thusly very disappointing. Oh dear, oh dear, oh dear.
Disappointing March 8, 2010 Bennett I. Bardfeld (South Jersey) 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
Not much improvement over the 1947 Original Cast. I expected more with more recording space and modern recording.
Sunset for Finian's Rainbow March 4, 2010 J. Hanna (Houston TX) 0 out of 7 found this review helpful
I had not listened to "Finian's Rainbow" for many years. When I saw there was a recording of a new Broadway production of the show, I thought I would update my acquaintance with this musical. Sadly, the show is so dated and the story so cumbersome that, after listening only once, I put the album in a box of old CD's that I am taking to a resale shop.
The recording quality is good, of course, and the voices are OK as well. The show just sinks under the weight of an unbelievable plot and the very odd combination of sharecroppers and a leprechaun. I did not find a pot of gold at the end of Finian's Rainbow.
