| Customer Reviews: Cole Porter played wonderfully July 24, 2007 Edward Weeks Sager (Sebring, FL USA) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
Bill Charlap is perhaps the greatest jazz pianist today. I can't get enough of him. These Japanese Venus recordings with 24 bit Hyper Magnum Sound are great, pristine and flawless, although sound very close-miked in a way that is a little unnatural. Small quibble for such fine listening pleasure. This is the fifth in a series beginning about 2001 with the New York Trio. It sure lets you hear the details and the music is wonderful. The selections here are tasteful and compatible - what a way to hear Cole Porter! Bill is up to his usual excellent form, and the trio working here plays this all Cole Porter standard session with such deep understanding of them as well as obvious enjoyment. He really does have an encyclopedic knowledge of jazz song from the American Songbook. It's great to listen to such excellent musicians having fun making great music together. If you haven't heard him before, I'd recommend starting with his latest 'Live at the Village Vanguard', which will wet your appetite for lots more. Enjoy this master of jazz song.
