Something different in a workout DVD -- love it July 18, 2010 Meredith (Ohio) 30 years old and dancing for the first time in 20 years, thanks to my 3-year-old daughter, who's recently taken up ballet and tap (we're practicing together). These DVDs caught my eye and I thought they would be a great way to enhance my dance practice. Really like them -- the routines are slow-paced compared to other workout videos, but the moves are very focused and deliberate, great for your body. An excellent addition to my exercise routine.
Good for beginners June 18, 2010 Krystal (los angeles, california, usa) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
These videos are great for people who are unfamiliar with ballet and are in reasonably good physical shape. Doing the exercises properly will definitely get you toned and more flexible. However, I do not recommend the videos for experienced ballet dancers. The videos will be way too simple and your odds of breaking a sweat are pretty low. There is very little actual ballet in either video, you're better off doing your own barre exercises, pilates and adagio if you really want to work out. I sold the videos to my friend because I got nothing out of them, personally.
LOVE IT! June 1, 2010 Ana K. Palomares (Houston, TX) I was hesitant at first because I have bought many disappointing workout dvdsin the past but I can securely say I fell in love. It made me feel just like a ballerina and so in control of my body. It really works out my muscles while streching them which leaves me feeling just like an hour long session of yoga would. I feel graceful right after my workout (when I know I am far from it) and the feeling continues. It has helped my posture and I feel my body grow more resistant as well as more flexible. The music is lovely it gave me appreciation of how rhythmic classical music can be. The only slight problem is that on the first dvd the narrator is not in sync with the dancers which can be avoided by just observing them. Once you get used to it you will know it is time to switch it up by the sound of the music. The dancers are a delight to watch, they are so in control of their bodies even the more challenging stuff doesn't phase them (which is to be expected since they are ballet dancers). Overall both dvd's are amazing.
toned thighs May 19, 2010 A. Pace (houston, tx) Yes the workout helps with flexibility and strength; but it has toned my impossibly tonable thighs nicely. My inner thighs are looking beautiful and i've only done it for a little over a month now. Very pleased.
Low-impact workout... April 28, 2010 Obama-Mama (Orange County, CA) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I did both workouts in this set, and found them to be a bit too easy and low-impact. This would be a good workout for a day when one is in "active recovery" from a previous days' hard workout; however, I felt I needed more of a challenge. There is also not enough of a cardio section, and the sections in general were quite short, not enough to feel I had really accomplished much in each particular section. I actually enjoyed Elise Gulan's "Ballet Conditioning" more as a true workout where I was getting sweatier by the end and was really feeling the burn in my thighs and calves (regardless of the non-traditional setting outdoors and the "smooth jazz" type soundtrack in the background). However, the artistry, poise of the dancers, and musical selection of this NYC Ballet Workout set is much more authentic to ballet. I am exploring trying some true ballet classes on DVD by ordering Dmitri Roudnev's ballet DVDs, to see if they offer more of a challenge along with the classical elements of ballet. I have taken basic ballet classes and have danced pretty much all my life, so I think I would be up to the challenge. This DVD set was a good intro, though I can't imagine myself using it that often in the future if I'm presented with more advanced ballet conditioning practices. It would be better for a novice who has had little dance training or someone who wants a low-impact, easily "do-able" workout for a first-time exposure to basic ballet dance technique. Each workout is about an hour in length, which is a good length for a workout, but it's true that too much time is spent in transitions between sections and it's difficult to skip tracks (there are ways around this, however, with the fast-forward feature of your DVD player or computer). Plus, I don't mind doing the workouts in their entirety.
