5 out of 5 stars One of Elton's Best   May 5, 2010
Lone Wolf (Michigan)
I bought this album way back in 1988 right after it was released & it is still one of my favorites today. Alot of fans knock it becuz it sounds too 80's or becuz it isn't up there with classic albums like "Yellow Brick Road". Does it have songs that measure up to epics like "Funeral for a Friend/Love Lies Bleeding"? Nope, but it does have a strong setlist with many catchy melodic pop songs. Does it sound like a typical 80's record with lots of synth? Sure, but not as much as previous Elton albums and besides, what's wrong with a little synth if it adds alot to the song? Alot of great pop/rock tunes came out during the 80's synth era & there's a simple reason why 80's compilations sell way more than any other. It's becuz the tunes were well produced, very catchy & unique and above all else - melodic. And as far as i'm concerned, there's nothing wrong with that. Ok, back to this album. It is not only one of the best from the 80's but also Elton's expansive catalog and there are plenty of catchy uptempo tracks to be found. Tracks like "Town of Plenty", "Mona Lisa's And Mad Hatters (Part Two)" & "Goodbye Marlon Brando" are very likable & fast paced pop tunes you will probably like the very first time you hear them (which is definitely the sign of a good song). Then of course you have the album's big hit "I Don't Wanna Go on With You Like That". A very catchy dance track with a nice rhythm to it. My favorite track on the album is "The Camera Never Lies". It is a very catchy mid-tempo number that kind of sounds a little like Elton's future hit - "Healing Hands" and just like that song it has great percussion, piano, synth & a nice chorus as well. It's a shame it wasn't released as a radio single cuz I think it could've charted fairly well if given the chance. The ballads on the album are also top notch. The best being the elegant single - "A Word In Spanish". Definitely one of Elton's best songs. I also enjoyed the quiet but atmospheric "Japanese Hands" & the album's closer "Since God Invented Girls" which is a tribute not only to beautiful women but the Beach Boys & it even has them singing the b/g vocals. The other tracks are pretty good too & sometimes even quite humorous if you listen to the vocals closely.

As far as this re-release goes, there are 4 previously un-released tracks. The first is "Rope Around A Fool" & it has a nice bluesy New Orleans style piano that kind of reminds me of Dr. John. There are also 2 re-mixes of "I Don't Wanna Go On With You Like That" & "Mad Hatters 2" which are interesting but much inferior to the originals. The re-mix of "I don't wanna" is a typical dance/hip-hop style re-mix that is much longer than the original (7:17) & is also sped up somewhat. The re-mix of "Mad Hatters" is very similar in style it & clocks in at 6:19. The highlight from the new songs though is the stripped down jazzier version of "I Don't Wanna Go On With You Like That". It's still a fast song but all you hear is Elton on the piano with some nice b/g vocals & it is very intimate(Think Unplugged). I almost like it better than the original & i'm not even a big fan of stripped down music.

As for the re-mastering, it is definitely an improvement over the original sound but only somewhat. The biggest difference being a much punchier bass & slightly louder volume. So if you already own this album, it's not a night & day difference but if you love this album as much as I do or wanna hear the new tracks, it's def worth the double dip.

All in all, I think this is one of Elton's best albums & it deserves much more respect than it typically gets. A joy from beginning to end & you would be hard pressed not to find at least a few tracks here that are really enjoyable.

3 out of 5 stars Better as a memory...   July 23, 2009

I recently picked up Elton John's catalog from the 80's, replacing the albums that I had back in the dark ages, and put this in the mix, remembering it as a very good album. My memory was not what it should have been. This is an okay album, with a few strong songs, but overall it did not work very well. To be honest, downloading Town of Plenty, the opening cut, and "Since God invented girls", the closing cut, and you pretty much have the album. Not as good as most of Elton's work.

Reg Strikes Back being Elton John's 1988 and his 21st studio album was met with mediocre critical review and I agree with them. This is an alright album but nothing more. There a few good tracks "word in Spanish" and "I don't wanna go on with you like that" but there are many tracks that are just not that great. The booklet has all the lyrics and a list of whom and what they play on the album. 3/5.

4 out of 5 stars Good songs (generally)   May 10, 2008

Good "comeback" album/cd. Homage to Honky Chateau's ML&MH & some other songs revisit his better period, although it would be a while before he did a good song end-to-end. This is seen by most as hist first true step back up.

3 out of 5 stars Average Elton   October 15, 2007

This is a lot better than the dire Leather Jackets that preceded it by a few years, but I would say this is album for completists only. Some of the songs are quite good, noteably 'Heavy Traffic' and 'I don't wanna go on with you like that' which is the best track on the album by some margin. However for me the benchmark for Elton John albums is whether it has a great song on it. When I say a great song I mean a song that will stand the test of time like 'Goodbye Yellow Brick Road' 'Your Song' or 'Border Song' or more recently 'This Train don't stop there anymore'. Sadly the answer is no, although 'I don't wanna...' goes close.

Like a previous reviewer said the absence of real Piano is another sore point for me. If you get an Elton John album that has no real Piano on it, its like buying an Eric Clapton album with no Guitar on it. Sure this has some sythesized electronic Piano like sounds but not real Piano. The other major problem for me is that this being recorded in 1988 its horribly over-produced, full of droning uneccessary background keyboards and drums which were apparently played by Charlie Morgan, but frequently sound like a drum machine. Listen to the beginning of 'The camera never lies' - hideous....

So its not the worst by a long way, but before you buy this you should buy all the 70's albums (except for 'Victim of Love'), 'Two Low For Zero', 'Sleeping with the past', 'Songs from the West Coast' and 'The Captain and the kid'.
