Amazon.com essential recording
Enya's 1988 recording Watermark achieved landmark success with her groundbreaking use of multi-tracking technology to fuse new age and Celtic themes and instrumentation. The meticulous production defines her sound and achieves continuity even while weaving together tender ballads, piano pieces, massively layered vocal harmonies, and symphonic synthesizer movements. Although Enya's pristine voice isn't especially strong, her lead vocals possess a vulnerability that reflects the lyrics' sense of personal searching. From the ubiquitous, frothy single "Orinoco Flow" (which was used to hawk Crystal Light on TV) to the hard, bold edge of "Cursum Perficio," Enya's style remains fresh and engaging today. --Richard Price

4 out of 5 stars Some really good stuff here!   May 18, 2010
Yukio (South MS)
This is one of the few albums that enya (or any artists for that matter) did that most of the music on it was very enjoyable and fun to listen to and managed to keep my attention and was not only good background music but also good FOREground music as well. None of the music is overly lauden or falsy dramatic or overdone. It is an enjoyable listen no matter what you enjoy.

5 out of 5 stars Very gentle but incredibly beautiful and mesmerizing music   April 28, 2010
Jonathan M. Davis (Scottsdale, AZ USA)
This album sits in my digital collection sort of "standalone". I originally heard it when my older sister bought it on cassette tape about twenty years ago. I loved it then and still rate it 5 stars today. Nothing else really sounds exactly like it, and nothing ever will. It is a snapshot of early-90s synthesized orchestration music laid out in a gentle, thoughtful manner meant to soothe and provide ambiance or to be heard and thoroughly enjoyed. Enya's chord progressions are mesmerizing in this album, and her choice of fifths and octaves for her multitracked vocals as she oohs and ahhs with synthesized strings literally give me goosebumps. The repetition is catchy and the melodies are hypnotizing. If you're looking for a pop or rock album, something with some decent energy, keep looking, this isn't for you. If you want to hear some gentle e.piano music while angelic harmonies of Enya's own multi-tracked voice softly caress the audio landscape while ethnic drums beat to the sound of ships sailing across the seas, this album will not disappoint!

5 out of 5 stars Lovely   March 27, 2010
Ashley Cunningham
I've listened to Enya for years, ever since I was a child in the early 90's, and this album has a special place in my heart because of that. However, over the years, it has never failed to please me. I wasn't much impressed with Enya's debut CD "Enya" (known better today as "The Celt"), but this album is far better.

"Watermark"- gentle piano piece, very pretty

"Cursum Perfecio"- shows Enya's vocal range from low to high notes, a haunting tune reminiscent of later songs like "Ebudae", "Tempus Vernum", and "Pax Deorum"

"On Your Shore"- another quiet, gentle piece

"Storms in Africa"- gorgeous song with an African flavor

"Exile"- reminds me of Clannad's "Theme from Harry's Game" with the haunting tune and the pennywhistle interlude towards the end

"Miss Clare Remembers"- another instrumental

"Orinoco Flow"- what's not to like? It's catchy and fills your mind with images of sailing on the ocean

"Evening Falls"- this song is similar to "Exile"

"River"- an instrumental piece that evokes the image of a busy river

"The Longships"- using the same lyrics as the song "The Celts," this is very different and haunting

"Na Laetha G'eal M'Oige"- a nostalgic piece with a nice uillean pipe interlude

"Storms in Africa II"- this song is not on all releases of this album. It's basically an English remix of "Storms in Africa."

This CD, to me, defines Enya as an artist, with her lovely, haunting voice and the piano/ synthesizer. I wish her other albums were more like this one.

5 out of 5 stars Enya's albums are fantastic if you want to really test out the power of a sterio.   March 18, 2010
Jonathan R. Hayden (Philly, PA)
And with that in mind, this is the reason that I purchased this album. For both car audio & home theater, Enya albums will really put your speakers through a vigorous workout. The result of this workout is a chance for you to properly tune your system so that it sounds pitch perfect.

Way to go, Enya!

5 out of 5 stars Sweet otherworldly music   March 14, 2010
Andre R. Hill (Jamaica)
I must observe that this review is a review of Enya's music on a whole.Simply, her music is remarkeable.I feel that I can hardly move whenever I am listening to her heavenly vocals and rich instrumentation.I am but a dream wandering on the tameless winds as I listen to the music, allowing it to swell inside me,boundless tides of never ending fantasy and magic.I am transported, melted, almost to tears, simultaneously sorrowing and rejoicing for forgotten and new dreams. One of my favourite songs bear the words:"Summer when the day is over, there's a heart a little colder.Someone said goodbye, but you dont know why.Is there a reason why a broken heart begins to cry?"Also the piece Exile on Watermark is truly celtic as it is powerful.
