Tired twinkles August 14, 2009 IRate 0 out of 2 found this review helpful
Rather dull exercise in early staged symphonic electronica either wallows in uninspired repetition or bombastically relays scattershot ideas, all under a five movement pretense.
Hypnotic and enthralling May 19, 2009 K. Swanson (Austin, TX United States) Certainly one of Vangelis' best and not far behind Blade Runner and Chariots of Fire, Soil Festivites is uniquely Vangelis, displaying many of the hallmarks of his finest works.
The first long movement is my least favorite, due to the constant synth note on each and every downbeat for a quarter of an hour. It's somewhat entrancing but also mixed too far forward, and it detracts from the gorgeous washes and moments happening melodically and harmonically. It is in any case a fine piece of music, though I often skip this opening track and listen to it last.
But the rest of the album is 100% sweetness, with the strangely calming vibe that Vangelis occasionally whips up in his little soundlab (there's a great filmed interview in his studio linked at the bottom of his wiki page; check it out). You can almost see the little seedlings sprouting and growing into majestic trees as the rain sweeps across the soil. I've been listening to this all spring and it's been a perfect soundtrack as the greenery comes to life all around.
One of his lesser-known works, Soil Festivities is nonetheless one of Vangelis' best, and highly worth a listen. Or two hundred.
A masterpiece of Vangelis June 14, 2007 Javier Pilcante Sanhueza (Chile) Again, this is an excelente work ok Vangelis. Creativity, technology, inspiration... a great piece of music!!!
One of the best of its kind January 9, 2007 Guy Campeau (Stoneham, Québec Canada) If you are looking for one of the best ambiant music ever maid, this one is for you. The opening track is amazing, as are movement 2 and 4.
Movement 3 and 5 are the weakest of the album but they're not bad at all.
Go outside on a dark summer night, far away from the city and watch the stars and put this cd in your car stereo, you'll be on another world.
Great work Vangelis.
Original and Inspiring January 7, 2006 Shaw N. Gynan (Bellingham, WA USA) 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
I have read all the reviews, and all I can add is that among the Vanglis CD releases, this is a special event. Vangelis, as I have mentioned elsewhere in reviews of his work, has developed a musical vocabulary and grammar, certain instruments and melodies that he tends to weave in and out of compositions throughout his career. These are really quite wonderful, and I am a confirmed fan, but Soil Festivities is deep, close to the level of Beaubourg and Invisible Connections, and yet somehow more accessible.
The jazzy calliope-like ambience that he creates, with a background of rain and storm, is wistful, gentle, insistent, loving, occasionally obtrusive, but mostly calming and delightful.
I can think of nothing that even begins to approach the originality and attractiveness of this musical accomplishment.
